This digital padlock can help your SEO

This week, James and Tristan talk about https, the SSL-encrypted protocol that causes the padlock to be shown in the address bar and that you may be familiar with from Internet banking and eCommerce. Industry giants, including Google, are pushing for website owners to implement https, even if you are not talking credit card details or dealing with private information. James and Tristan cover four important reasons that you should upgrade your website to SSL-encrypted hosting in the coming months next year.

SSL is security technology for establishing encrypted links between a web server and a web browser. SSL allows data to be transmitted securely. Normally, data sent between browsers and web servers is sent in plain text. This leaves you vulnerable to eavesdropping. If an attacker is able to intercept all data being sent between a browser and a web server, they can see and use that information. Hackers can also change what is being transmitted by the web server by intercepting the traffic. This can be used to undertake sophisticated attacks, even when the information being transmitted doesn't appear on the surface to be particularly private or secretive. For example, a hacker can intercept traffic and add in code to infect a computer with a virus.

Google is so convinced that having website operators switch to https hosting is critical to Internet security, they are now giving an SEO (search engine optimisation) boost to websites that use https. They have indicated that in the future the "carrot" of an SEO boost for using https will be extended and sites that do not use https will in fact be moved down in search rankings.

SSL will impact all aspects of your web presence from your customer's user experience, to the SEO of your website and even your liability if a user on your website is compromised so this is becoming an ever-increasingly important part of web management.

If you aren't sure if your website is secure, simply check the url or web address bar of your website and see if it has 'http' or https' - the 's' means that you are secure.

If you only have the 'http' and you want to make sure that your customers and your data remains safe, and also benefit from the Google SEO boost that secure websites are currently enjoying, contact 1300 Web Pro for advice on upgrading your web hosting.
