Last week Google updated Chrome to make it even more obvious when a website is not securely hosted. If you have a website and it's not secure, your potential customers will be alerted which may deter them from doing business with you.
What is HTTPS?
HTTPS stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure, which is an encrypted link between a web server and a browser. This adds another layer of security which ensures that all data passed between the web server and browsers remain private and protected.
Web browsers like Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer will display a green padlock icon in the address bar to indicate the website is secure
In the past week, Google has updated Chrome to display the words "not secure" in front of website addresses that are not securely hosted. Previously, it wasn't very prominent when a website didn't secure hosting, whereas now, it's much more clear.
It's anticipated that in the near future, Google will change this warming to red with an alert symbol and other browsers will soon follow.
Why do you need it?
This alert can make your website visitors concerned about security and may even deter people from doing business with you. If you've got forms or people are entering data on your website, it means customer data could be watched and potentially stolen.
In addition to making your website and data more protected, Google and other search engines have suggested they will give websites with secure hosting a small SEO boost. This meaning it's more likely to appear higher in search results.
What you should do?
For business and website owners, we recommend all websites to have secure hosting as it's safer for your business and your customers. If your website takes card payments online, you are required to have secure hosting in order to be PCI compliant. However, we recommend all websites to be secure hosting.
As an internet user, you should be cautious on websites without secure hosting to ensure your data remains safe.
