Google is focusing on Mobile First design for search results

Traditionally Google has primarly based their search results algorithms on the desktop version of websites. In April of 2015, with more and more online traffic happening on mobile devices, Google began including the quality of a website's mobile friendliness in conjunction with their desktop website. Now they are taking it one step further and using mobile sites as the primary version of the webiste for ranking results. If a website isn't mobile friendly then Google will penalise it with lower organic search rankings.

So what does mobile friendly mean?

When a website is mobile friendly, the layout and content responds based on the size of screen they are presented on. A mobile friendly website automatically changes to fit the device you’re reading, both in terms of screen width and suitability for typing vs tap.

With more and more online activity happening on mobile devices, ensuring your website is mobile friendly for multiple screen sizes is no longer an option. Customers expect to be able to find out about your business, see where you are and contact you all from their mobile phones and Google will soon start ranking websites on their mobile sites.

Just because your website resizes on your phone doesn't mean Google considers it to be mobile friendly. There are a number of different design and technical aspects for a website to be considered mobile friendly by Google so even if your website looks good on mobile or if you think you have made it mobile friendly, it's important to use the Google Mobile Friendly Websites tool and check for yourself.
