In this week’s webchat, Brendan and Teeka discuss the 5 most common mistakes made by businesses who operate e-commerce websites.
If you sell your products through an online store then you could be making 5 common mistakes that are crippling your sales. We have created a list of the most common (and easy to fix!) mistakes and explain how small changes will make big differences.
5. Not enough content on the homepage
When writing content for your website it is important to take great care with your homepage. When Google is indexing and trying to work out whether to rank your site, it treats your home page as the most important page.
It's crucial to make sure your homepage contains the following key information:
- who you are
- what you sell
- who you sell it to
- where you sell it
By including this information you are giving Google enough information to potentially rank your website highly which will help customers searching for your products to find you.
4. Not enough content on category pages
Often with an e-commerce store, when you click into a category you are directed to a list of products. Many stores make the mistake of having no content on the page to tell Google and your customers what type of products appear in this category.
When there is content on these pages Google has more of an opportunity to rank your category pages which improves the chance of customers visiting your website from a Google search and making a purchase.
3. Poor product description
Good product description can be the difference between a sale and an abandoned cart. Unfortunately, when an online store has hundreds of products on their website, the description don't always receive the attention it deserves.
If you are selling your products online, you don't have the luxury of being in the same room as the client to explain the features and benefits of the product. That’s why it’s so important to ensure the product’s description is detailed enough for the client to purchase the product with confidence. Especially if your potential customer is comparing your products to another website's, they are more likely to buy from the store with the better product description.
2. Poor or not enough photos
The more pictures the better! Your customer doesn't get the chance to see the products in person to pick it up, try it on or inspect its quality. This why the photos you put on your website are so important. The idea is to give your potential customer an in-store like experience and if you have great images your customer will have confidence in your products.
1. No online promotion
To solely rely on Google to show your organic (non-paid) website or product pages when a customer searches is leaving it to chance. Online advertising with Google is a great way to drive potential customers to your website as 95% of people in Australia use Google as their preferred search engine.
You are often competing with many other online stores, so online advertising can help customers choose your websites over your competitors. To improve the number of website visitors, we recommend the following Google AdWords campaigns:
- Google Search Ads
- Google Display Ads
- Google Shopping Ads
This will help to promote your products and direct people to your website, ensuring you are getting the sales that you need.
Don't let these common mistakes drag down your online sales. By making these small changes you will start to see massive improvements.
